Clash for Windows Tutorial

Complete step-by-step guide to install, configure and use Clash Client on Windows

Installation Guide

1

Download Clash for Windows

Visit our download page and get the latest version of Clash for Windows. Choose between the installer (.exe) or portable (.zip) version.

Note: The installer version is recommended for most users as it handles all setup automatically.

2

Run the Installer

Double-click the downloaded .exe file and follow the installation wizard:

  • Accept the license agreement
  • Choose installation location (default is recommended)
  • Select additional tasks like creating desktop shortcut
  • Click "Install" and wait for completion

Security Warning: If you see a Windows SmartScreen warning, click "More info" and then "Run anyway". This is normal for unsigned applications.

3

Launch Clash for Windows

After installation completes, launch Clash from the desktop shortcut or Start menu. The first run may take a few seconds to initialize.

Portable Version Users: Extract the ZIP file to your preferred location and run Clash for Windows.exe directly from the extracted folder.

Configuration

1

Import Proxy Configurations

Clash requires proxy configurations to work. You can:

  • Import a configuration file (.yaml or .yml)
  • Add a subscription URL (if provided by your service)
  • Manually configure proxies in the interface

Tip: Most proxy services provide configuration files or subscription URLs for easy setup.

2

Set Up Proxy Nodes

After importing configurations:

  1. Go to the "Proxies" tab
  2. Select your preferred proxy nodes
  3. Test connection speeds using the ping tool
  4. Set fallback nodes if available

Subscription Users

Set up auto-update interval to keep your nodes fresh (recommended: 6-12 hours)

Manual Config Users

Remember to update your configuration file when nodes change

3

Configure Routing Rules

Clash allows granular control over which traffic goes through the proxy:

  • Use built-in rule sets or create custom rules
  • Set rules based on domain, IP, or geo-location
  • Configure bypass rules for local networks

Advanced Tip: You can edit the configuration file directly for more complex rule setups.

Basic Usage

1

Starting the Proxy

To begin using Clash:

  1. Ensure your configuration is properly set up
  2. Click the "General" tab
  3. Toggle the "System Proxy" switch to ON
  4. Select your desired proxy mode (Rule, Global, or Direct)

Recommended: Start with "Rule" mode for balanced performance and flexibility.

2

System Proxy Settings

Clash will automatically configure your system proxy settings when enabled. You can verify this:

  • Windows: Settings > Network & Internet > Proxy
  • Should show "127.0.0.1" with port "7890"
  • No manual configuration needed in most cases

Note: Some applications may require manual proxy configuration or may not respect system proxy settings.

3

Monitoring Connections

Clash provides real-time connection monitoring:

  • View active connections in the "Connections" tab
  • Monitor traffic usage and speeds
  • Check proxy latency and health status
  • Force close problematic connections if needed

Troubleshooting

Clash won't start

  • Ensure no other proxy software is running
  • Check if the required ports (7890, 7891) are available
  • Try running as administrator
  • Check Windows Event Viewer for error details

No internet access when proxy is on

  • Verify your proxy nodes are working
  • Check your configuration file for errors
  • Try switching to a different proxy mode
  • Disable any VPN or firewall temporarily for testing

Slow connection speeds

  • Test different proxy nodes to find the fastest
  • Check your base internet speed without proxy
  • Try adjusting MTU settings in your configuration
  • Consider using a closer geographical server
